Resident awarded Quilt of Valor

The world is full of Veterans. Men and women who have given their time to securing the freedoms that make America the land of the free. A man like Bill Heintz is much like any other American solider. He is devoted, kind and respectful. After his service in the Second World War, Bill returned to Iowa to start a family. The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 to show appreciation and give comfort to Veterans. One such recipient for this award is Waterford’s very own Bill Heintz. Sunday, September 24th 2017, he was given a quilt of valor. This quilt was awarded to him as a show of gratitude for his service. Surrounded by loved ones, family and a few members of the local American Legion branch, he was wrapped in the hand crafted quilt. Receiving one of these quilts is no small act. It takes hours of hard work, design and organization. Quilts of Valor was started from a dream that the founder, Catherine Roberts, had of a soldier alone with a quilt as his only comfort. The dream turned to the young man being comforted by a quilt. She realized that she had a calling. She grew a foundation to make these quilts to comfort Veterans and ever since, she and many volunteers have made quilts. They brought them to each Veteran as a way to not only say thank you but to physically show their appreciation. Bill Heintz’s quilt shows a soaring American eagle, framed by blue and white materials with stars as accents. It is sure to keep him warm during the upcoming months.
