The Longest Day Event!

On June 21, we're doing what we love to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Whitcomb House is participating in The Longest Day, a fundraising event to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Today, over 35 million people across the world are living with Alzheimer's, including more than 5 million Americans. In the U.S. alone, more than 15 million caregivers generously dedicate themselves to those with Alzheimer's and dementia. We must take action now, or these numbers will continue to rise.
Together, we can show those facing Alzheimer's disease that they are not alone. Please make a donation today to help the Alzheimer's Association support all those facing the disease. Thank you!

You can visit the Alzheimer's Association website at http://act.alz.org/
Check the daily activity sheets for fundraising events.

2019 Mass-ALA Facilities/Maintenance Service Award

His official title is Plant Operations Director, however all those who work with him know that he wears many hats - handyman, holiday decorator, master gardener, friend, colleague, confidante, and just a nice guy.
Over his 11 years Residents know they can turn to him to fix anything - hearing aids, watches, jewelry, wheelchairs, frames and more.
Throughout the year he decorates the grounds - 20 foot Halloween display, Christmas Manger, a Bunny Village. Outside the window by the main elevator, Residents always look to see what sort of decorations he's placed there. At Christmas they were thrilled to see a mini-village with lights. He's even taken Residents to his farm and pond to fish.
He brings in cuttings from his own home gardens to add to the magnificent perennial garden he has cultivated at the Community. The Hibiscus the size of Frisbee's catches everyone's eye. Indoors he grew a Pathos plant from a cutting 8 years ago where it extended from three pots 100 feet in various directions. Sadly, and in spite of his heroic efforts, the Pathos succumbed to a disease this past winter. The entire Community mourned it's loss.
He has decorated the bed nearest the road with Mum's - two years ago the message spelled out in colorful flower was LOVE (which is what he spreads daily) and this year the message was GO PATS! He is a diehard New Englander, cheering the Patriots and Red Sox fervently.
He stops to greet every Resident and employee by name; he never appears rushed, always willing to lend a sympathetic ear or sage wisdom earned over the years.
He is truly the foundation of the Community.
In the past year, he transitioned from Facility Manager to a true Plant Operations Director taking over the operations of the Housekeeping and Laundry departments, bringing the same standard of excellence there that he did to the maintenance department.
Earlier in the past year, he oversaw a complete transformation of the Community with a $1.5 million renovation.
He makes a difference every day in the the Residents lives trying every day to elicit a smile from each and every one. Everyone brightens up when he is in the room.
Ron has been with Whitcomb House for 11 years bringing his warmth and love to everyone he engages. There is nothing Ron won't due to bring a smile and laugh out, even from the grumpiest of the bunch. While his title is Plant Operations Director, and he does in excellent job there, his real title should be the Heart and Soul of Whitcomb House.
